DESCRIPTION:Please join Chris Cinque & the Sexual Violence Center for a survivor story-telling event at Form + Content Gallery in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis. The event will coincide with Chris’s solo exhibit of charcoal and mixed media works that are a visual memoir of her story. This space is specifically for women who have\, or think they have\, experienced childhood sexual abuse. Folks are welcome to share their stories\, but there will be no pressure to do so. Your presence is more than enough. A facilitator from the Sexual Violence Center will facilitate the event\, and there will be advocates from SVC onsite to provide emotional support as needed. \nThe event will be 75 minutes and will consist of a grounding exercise\, guideline sharing\, space for storytelling and survivor affirmation\, and a closing ritual. In order to keep the space private\, safe\, and intimate\, the event will be limited to 30 people\, so please reserve a ticket if you are planning on attending. Tickets are free and will be assigned on a first come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:Ask An Advocate: Intro to Restorative Justice: Reimagining Current Justice
DESCRIPTION:Currently\, the criminal legal system is the only systemic accountability mechanism available for victims/survivors of sexual violence. In recent years\, advocates and organizers have started reimagining the current system by wondering whether principles of restorative justice might be applied in the aftermath of sexual violence. In this session\, I will talk about the basics of restorative justice\, and I will go over some of the findings of a brand-new local research project conducted by Michele Braley of Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice and Dr. Katie Querna of St Cloud State University. We’ll discuss some of the exciting possibilities\, as well as some of the limitations and barriers. I will also talk about the work of the Restorative Justice/Gender Based Violence working group I am a part of. Finally\, I will talk about the differences between a restorative justice and transformative justice approach. Once I go over the basics\, we will open it up to a discussion. I want to hear your thoughts! This is a complex set of topics\, and I am not an expert\, so we will just be skimming the surface.
